Programme Overview:
- The objective of the OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management qualification is to provide learners with a specialist work-related programme of study that provides a depth of knowledge and understanding of key aspects within the business sector.
- Learners will study level 4 and 5 units, worth 120 credits per academic year with a total credit value of 240 credits (equivalent to the first 2 years of an honours degree). All units are mandatory.
- The Level 4 units lay the foundations of learning by providing an introduction to contemporary business topics.
- The units combine both theoretical and practical knowledge in the profession and will develop and enhance knowledge and skills in the areas of academic and research skills, business and global operations, finance and accounting, communication, leadership and team working.
- The Level 5 units give learners the opportunities to apply key skills and techniques in a variety of relevant occupational areas. The programme of study provides learners with an opportunity to engage with the challenges facing managers, professionals and policy makers in their own country.
- Learners will develop and enhance knowledge and skills in the areas of business strategy, human resources, marketing, business law, management accounting and decision making and understand the requirements for starting a new business.
- Successful completion of this qualification will equip learners with the specialist skills and technical terminology to develop their business and management skills and to progress to further study or employment.
Programme Structure:
The OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management qualification consists of 12 mandatory units, 240 credits, 2400 hours Total Qualification Time (TQT) and the recommended Guided Learning Hours (GLH) for this qualification is a minimum of 1200 hours. The qualification is designed to be delivered over two academic years for full-time study.
To achieve the OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management, learners must achieve 240 credits, of which 120 credits are at Level 4 (6 units) and 120 credits are at Level 5 (6 units).

Entry Requirements:
For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
- Relevant Level 3 Diploma qualification or equivalent qualification
- GCE Advanced level in 2 subjects or equivalent qualification
- Mature learners (over 21) with relevant management experience (learners must check with the delivery centre regarding this experience prior to registering for the programme)
- Holders of any local or international qualification deemed to be a similar level
- Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
Our Recognition of Prior Learning policy means that students’ previous learning and experience can be considered, and they may be awarded certain qualifications or units of a qualification based on that learning or experience.
English Language Requirements:
- Applicants applying for all our qualifications, which are taught and assessed entirely in English, need English language skills.
- Non-native English speakers who have not carried out their final two years of schooling in English should demonstrate ability at a standard equivalent to:
- Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2
- PTE Academic 51, or
- IELTS 5.5 (reading and writing must be at 5.5)
- We assess the level of English as part of the selection process using a written statement and an interview.
Other Requirements:
Candidates must have basic ICT knowledge (Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet and Email literacy).
Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of the OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management provides learners the opportunity for a wide range of academic progressions including the OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Business Management qualification.
As this qualification is approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), learners are eligible to gain direct entry into Year 3 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree programme.
After achieving the OTHM Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business Management, students can advance their careers by:
- Entering new employment
- Continuing existing employment
- Linking with the appropriate professional body
- Committing to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Studying at university
Application and Selection Process:
The application process allows the admissions team to select applicants meeting the above entry qualifications and demonstrate English Language competency. The admissions team will consider applications on a case-by-case basis.
Stage 1: Submission of the Application Form:
The applicant should submit an online application form, fill in all the fields, and upload the required documents. The registrar will invite the applicant for an informal interview and a discussion of the rest of the admissions process within one day.
Stage 2: Submission of the Written Statement:
Applicants will proceed to the full Interview only after submitting a written 350-400 +/-10% word statement meeting the following basic requirements:
- Applicants should submit their written statements no more than one working day after the initial interview. Ideally, the formal interview will follow the submission of the statement subject to time constraints.
- The statement must be in the applicant's own words.
- All statements must be typed using Microsoft Word and must not contain any pictures or any comments copied from other sources.

Stage 3: Interview Stage:
Academic staff will mark the statements on the day or within one working day of their submission.
Stage 4: Offers of Places:
Prospective students who succeed at the Interview receive conditional offers of places no more than 24 hours after the Interview and should confirm their acceptance within seven days
Applicants will be informed of any significant changes to the course that occur during the application process.
The admissions team will inform all successful applicants about the times and arrangements for enrolment, registration and induction.
Stage 5: Enrolment and Induction:
Once tuition fees are approved/paid, student enrolment onto the course and induction occur before students begin their studies.
