Student Finance
Student Finance (SLC) and Funding Application Support
All our courses at Brit College are approved for student finance or student loans, ensuring you have access to support your education. We understand that studying can be costly, and students may face unexpected financial hardships. That's why we will help with your student finance application for a smoother onboarding experience.
Student Finance Eligibility
Eligible students can apply for a student loan through Student Finance England, which may cover tuition and living expenses. Additional financial support is available for students with dependents or disabilities. The loan amount is often based on your income and personal circumstances. You won't need to start repaying your loan until you earn above the minimum repayment threshold, and the amount you repay is based on your earnings.
Note that the rules of SLC will be changing in 2025.
Our courses are structured into individual units or modules, each assigned specific credit values according to regulated frameworks and a required number of Guided Learning Hours (GLH). The inclusive course fees cover all teaching costs for these units/modules, along with any fees to awarding bodies, course administration, registration, and student support.
For any enquiries or support with your student finance application, please contact us at accounts@britcollege.ac.uk.
We're here to help you.
Fees Paying Options
You can pay your fees via the following options:
- Through the support of Student Finance England
- In instalments: 3 instalments for each academic year
- Full payment on enrolment
Disabled Students' Allowance
Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) helps you cover the study related costs you have because of a mental health problem, long-term illness or any other disability.
This can be on its own or in addition to any student finance you get. The type of support and how much you get depends on your individual needs, not your household income.
*You do not need to pay back DSA
What DSA Covers
DSA helps with costs related to:
- Specialist Equipment: For example, a computer if necessary due to a disability.
- Nonmedical Helpers: Such as a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter or a specialist note taker.
- Extra Travel: Additional travel expenses to attend courses or placements due to disability.
- Other Disability related Study Support: For instance, the cost of printing additional copies of documents for proofreading.
Buying a New Computer
You may be eligible for a new computer if:
- You do not already have one.
- Your current computer does not meet your study needs.
When purchasing a new computer, students are required to pay the first £200. Further details will be provided by the DSA team after the needs assessment.
Eligibility
To apply for DSA, you must reside in England and have a disability that affects your ability to study. Eligible conditions include:
- Specific Learning Difficulties: Such as dyslexia or ADHD.
- Mental Health Conditions: Such as anxiety or depression.
- Physical Disabilities: For instance, the need for crutches, a wheelchair, or a special keyboard.
- Sensory Disabilities: Such as visual impairments, deafness, or hearing impairments.
- Long-term Health Conditions: For example, cancer, chronic heart disease, or HIV.
Application Process
If you have already applied for student finance, Sign in to your student finance account to start your DSA application. The DSA application should be on your 'to-do list' if you selected DSA in your application for other support. If it is not, select 'change your circumstances' to apply.
Proof of Condition
Condition | Proof |
Disabilities or long-term health conditions | A copy of a report or letter from your doctor or consultant, or you can fill in the disability evidence form |
Mental health condition | A copy of a report or letter from your doctor or consultant or you can fill in the disability evidence form |
Specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia | A copy of a ‘diagnostic assessment’ from a practitioner psychologist or suitably qualified specialist teacher |
Needs Assessment
Students may be required to attend an assessment centre to determine the support needed, known as a 'needs assessment'. A letter will be sent detailing how to book this assessment, which is free of charge.
Students must provide a copy of the eligibility evidence used in their initial application to the needed assessor before the assessment. Afterward, a report will be issued, listing the equipment and support available for the course.
How long it takes
You’ll get confirmation of whether your application is successful within 6 weeks. It can take up to 14 weeks to get your DSA support in place as this is done separately.
Step-By-Step Process
- Make sure that your course is eligible for DSA funding. Eligibility - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
- Apply for DSA at Student Finance England www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas/how-toclaim
- Return/submit the completed form with up-to-date evidence of your disability and/or a diagnostic report confirming a Specific Learning Difficulty
- Wait for notification from Student Finance England that you are eligible to receive DSA.
- The DSA team will allocate a supplier for you, who will help you arrange an appointment for a needs assessment at a registered centre.
- The assessment is an informal meeting with an experienced assessor, who will help to work out what support you will need based on your needs. Take along copies of your evidence to this meeting
- After the needs assessment, a copy of the Student Finance England approval letter will be sent to you. (Please give permission for a copy to be sent to your Disability Service at University or College)
Next, your supplier will order the assistive technology and set up the installation and support as required. For nonmedical helper support, the needs assessment centre will help you organise this. For further help and advice, contact your Disability Service at your university or college.
